Very cool story. His rack is still pretty impressive but his body looks pretty beat up. Of course it is the end of the rut so he isn't at his best. I learned something today, thanks for sharing.

For the record I was guessing 10+ too.

Also note that at 2.5 he was a 7pt. By then he surely should have been at least an 8pt and should have been culled!

I really find it amazing that true enthusiasts interested in management will not acknowledge or accept that shooting young deer is a practice that should be shunned, but hey...I still know of deer leases where the old timers will not let the hunters shoot does, or you will never see any bucks??

His brother was a spike also as a yearling. The following year he was a five point. I never saw him again after that year. Nobody killed him so he probably died of natural causes.

Here is a picture of Tuffy at 8.5

                              7.5

Nope. When we first started out most of the spikes got shot. Then we cut back some and shot the ones with the shortest spikes. The ones that were four inches or less. We let the longer spikes go. Simply because they grew more bone. My thoughts are that during a drought year you can nearly kill off and entire age class of bucks by shooting all spikes. I don't believe that hardly any yearling spikes will ever get better than 160 but many do become nice management type bucks.
