    17 Hmr

He can tell me anything about these guns? I'm looking to get one. Are they more powerful than a 22 mag? Thanks alot.

    Define "powerful".

.17 HMR shoots either a 17 gr or a 20 gr bullet at high velocities. Drops very quickly after about 100 yards as it bleeds off its velocity. People have killed pigs and coyotes with it, however, I wouldn't recommend it. I use it primarily for smaller varmints.

    Inherently very accurate.

I love mine, one of the most fun for the dollar rifles I own.

    I have a CZ452 and couldn't recommend it more.

more accurate and flatter shooting but IMO not as potent on larger game such as coyote.

well I hate to go against the grain but I prefer my .22 mag. It does everything the .17 can with a little more umph. The .17 to me is the the super short magnums. Gun/ammo manufactures needed something new to sell (kinda like bow manufactures) to keep people interested. Animal dies jsut as quick with a .22 vs the .17 .300 win mag vs .300 wssm new Hoyt vs my older reflex add nauseum. But if you want one then by all means get one

Shells are higher than 22 cal. guns and not much more accurate. They do shoot good but very small game is all that I would consider shooting with one. If you deer hunt or your after coyotes and bobcats or larger go with a 223 and fillup the freezer with hides. The 22 LR is hard to beat for cheap fun and no recoil or noise.

I have both and the 17 is very weak IMO,it's a neat looking cartridge but just not enuff bullet weight, the 22 WMR is a much more reliable killer.plus with both I wouldn't go over 100 yds anyway.

Great fun to shoot and a killer for the racoons. Keep it for its intended purpose and you'll be fine.

Agreed.........Hornady ammo in my .17 left about a 6 inch exit hole in a 8 inch long rabbit at 75 yards. I was impressed

I bought this Ruger Single Six in .17HMR back in September, mainly for a close-in varmint gun. It is accurate and fun to shoot. I think the points made above are all valid. Don't let the size of the cartridge fool you....it packs a punch!

I started shooting the 33 grain bullets in my .22 mag, and they do very well. Kind of made it a moot point for me to get a .17 HMR.... if you don't have either though, I think I'd still go with a .22 mag jsut for a better versatility.

I can still get heavier bullets for it in case I decide to go after coyotes, elephants or water buffalo as well.

I wanted to get something that would scare the hogs away and would not be very loud. I actually shot a hog yesterday at about 30 yards and dropped it in its tracks. If you shot a hog with that gun in the head at say 50-60 yards do you think it would kill it?

I bought one when they first came out. I wish now that I had kept my .22 mag. Now that lighter bullets are offered for the .22 mag it would be a better choice.

My .17 hmr is flatter shooting but the wind blows it around very bad.

I like it for 100yd P-Dogs and punching holes in paper. Mine is the Savage 93R17, came with the scope. It does .5 MOA at 100yd with either bullet up to about 5mph wind. Fun but bullets are kinda on the expensive side if you shoot a lot. It will do a number on Yotes, jack rabbits, anything small.
I would love to give a pig an ear ache with it one day.

I kill hogs out to 100yds all the time with my 17hmr. I use a 6.5x20 scope and shoot them behind the ear. I'm using the 20gr hornady bullets. It all about bullet placement if you are going to shoot hogs with the 17.

                              I don't have a .17hmr but my .17 mach 2 is a squirrel killing rifle.

If you look around you can get a ruger with synthetic stock and blued barrel for 299 new. Great rifle.
