Bot Fly larve on a Dog?

Anyone ever heard of this? Yea...me either....until today.

Jesse has had a spot on her flank since the last trip to the lease a few weeks ago. I figured it was cactus or mesquite and would heal, but she kept messing with it.

My wife made me look at it last night and the first thing I thought was Bot Fly! So my wife got the pleasure of taking her to the vet this morning and my diagnosis was correct.

The Vet "popped it like a zit" and my wife probably won't ever touch the dog again and for certain won't be able to eat lunch today!

Gross, but I guess any animal can be a host. Quick google search of how animals pick up bot fly larvae" yielded results for dogs, so it must be more common than we think

There are videos on YouTube of vets squeezing hundreds of fly larvae out of dogs. It will make you gag.

Saw a warning on FB said it was because of the Heat..Not sure the truth behind that statement

One of my pups had the same. Wife called screaming "There's something in Tobey". Got home, cut it open, & finally pulled that sucker out! Tricky endeavor as the bot larvae didn't wann come out! Took about 30min

We had a buck killed this year that had one come out of its nose.I suppose once the host(deer) is dead the larve wants to leave and find another.Nasty creatures!

I saw a video where a woman had one in her head. They shaved the area and put a piece of packing tape over it. This caused the boy fly to suffocate. They were then able to remove it without it wriggling around.

its called a cuterebra and these things are my favorite. you don't see it too common but any animal can be a host. they live in the nasal passages of deer and burrow into soft tissue of other animals causing cysts with an air opening. you have to be very careful about removing these little guys , if you crush them they will cause a nasty local reaction. I have seen huge wounds on cattle that smashed them on the chute when they were being worked.

Haha!!! Yes...same dog. And as I told someone just now...there is no cost too high to make me perform either of these procedures. I'll leave both to the professionals. <gag>
