What do you expect from a broadhead?

Is accuracy and lethality good enough for you? I have shot Muzzys for years. After many kills, most off the time I just need to sharpen the blades and I'm good to go. Very rarely have I needed to replace the blades or the whole broadhead. This season, with much reservation,I decided to try the Rage Hypodermic. I've taken 2 animals , but both times the blades returned bent. I expected since I was paying a premium price,I would be able to use the blades more than once. What is your experience with Rage and what do you expect from your broadheads?

Look at the structural design of the blades. Hard to expect them to be as tough as a muzzy or BH of similar design.

I shoot Ramcats and expect to replace the blades after a kill. IMO-It's the most important part of our equipment and a small expense on the greater scale of things.

Having said that, if I was a high volume hog killer, I'd shoot something more durable such as a slick trick or Magnus stinger.

I've been shooting the rage hypodermic and have been impressed. Flying like a field point is my number one concern and they do for sure. Have always shot expandables, when I shoot one and it's messed up bad I chunk it or you can sometime salvage it and make it your pig head. That being said I always shoot a brand new head at deer, I spend too much money on everything else to let the price of new broadheads deter me!

That's the reason I wouldn't use them. Gimmicky junk. You don't need a 3" cut for a quick kill and easy blood trail. There are plenty of stout broadheads on the market.

          No potential for failure.
          Durability.
          Ease of sharpening.

          Fixed blade only for me.
          Muzzy and magnus primarily.

Those fly great, kill extremely quickly and leave short massive bloodtrails. You'd probably complain if hung with a new rope!!

For all the money we spend on deer hunting I could care less about having to buy replacement blades. I think the positive far out weigh the negatives.

I expect it to do it's job if I do my job and make a good shot . If the head bends , breaks I don't care as long as it did it's job and killed .

If you can't afford replacement blades, probably shouldn't buy " premium " broadheads.

I may only shoot one or two broadheads a year. I don't worry about reusing them, I just by a new set of three each year.

This argument doesn't hold water. Why not buy a more expensive bow? Why not lease the place all to your self? Why not eat steak instead of a burger?

Most people seek to minimize cost and maximize value.

To me it's not about affordability. It's about quality. We all are aware of the possibility of losing an arrow, broadhead, etc. each time we let loose an arrow. But should that really be the expectation? If I'm shooting a one and done broadhead, it should be one and done pricing.

Like TxAg said minimize cost, maximize value.

So for those of you who shoot Rage, is this the expected result with every Rage every time? Do they make a different head that's a more hearty?

Old school and like simple. A fixed 3 blade, g5Monotec or a NAP 3 blade Thunderhead. They fly well for me and they work period no it's and's or but's.

I can't say enough about slick trick viper tricks. They are amazing broad heads. I've shot 12 coons 1 opossum and 2 hogs so far and havnt had anything go past 30 yards. First hog I shot was about 50-60lb boar and I made a bad shot guys/liver hog went 20-25 yards and fell over blood trail was easy to find a plenty thick to follow. Second hog was about 200lbs boar shot him head on broad head entered top of skull went through shoulder and sternum and poked out his chest pulled the arrow out and the broad head was still pretty sharp no bent or broken blades.

I have shot 20 or so animals With rage most of the time they come back fine sometimes bent and one time broke. every time there is massive blodtrails and short tracks and that's most important to me

All I expect out of a broadhead is for the animal it hits to die! I don't care if it's one and done. I rarely shoot them again even if fixed blades. For me, the broadhead is about the cheapest part of my hunt.
