Beings you were close to the lake it could have been two big boar coons fighting. If you've never heard it will sound like something unexplainable and scare the hell out of the kids in the dark. They will fight till one either backs down or rolls over and starts screaming. True story I'm not making it up!

I was about 8 years old and my dad had just started letting me get off away from him in the woods while squirrel hunting. But still staying within hollering distance of him. After an hour or two of slipping around (or so I thought I was), I saw a squirrel up in a big hickory tree jump from limb to limb. So I start "sneaking" as much as an 8 y/o can trying to get closer and shoot it. I was just about ready to take aim and had been concentrating on the dang squirrel when my dad spoke out really loud "boy, you going to shoot my squirrel". He was leaning against a big oak tree right behind me about 10 ft. Scared the ever loving bejesus out a me and I know I peed my pants, might have sharted just a little bit too but don't remember. All I know is, it's amazing how far you can jump without moving a muscle (voluntarily). lol
I got him back many years later. Almost in the reverse way. But this time, I was standing still and he was trying to sneak up on one that I had been watching and heard him calling to it to get it to move. He didn't know I was there, and when he called for the squirrel, it moved to my side of the tree. So, being my father's son, I shot it out of the tree with my 12 guage. He didn't know I was there (about 20 yards from him). He screamed and started cussing at me something fierce. I was laughing so hard I was crying, which made him even madder. My brother and I still laugh till we cry when we talk about it. Dad doesn't think it's so funny. We just say "well, you taught us how to hunt". He just shakes his head.

I had a simular experience when I first joined Border Patrol. About 0100hrs i was on foot on the Rio Grande River alone looking for activity when I heard the exact same thing you described. I hunkered down and started scoping out the area with my NVGs. After about 20 minutes I caught movement across the river and after I concentrated in the area, I noticed a mountain lion chasing another. Not saying this is what you heard but you do describe the same sounds i heard. It can be nerve wrecking though. Sounded like a woman in the worst agony of her life. With all the ole stories the grownups used to tell us of "La Llorona" so we'd go to sleep, several things went thru my mind. Looking back, its now funny to tell the story, but it wasnt at the time.

Now you have no excuse for them never wanting to hunt again.
