While I have no idea what shook you and the boys up, I'll tell you of a similar experience I had about 2 weeks ago
I was in a ground box blind at our place just south of Colmesneil. Evening hunt and not seeing anything really. At about 5:15ish or so I thought I heard something headed my way in the brush ( the blind is set on the ground off to the side of a 2 brush hog width road that goes down to a feeder) the brush is about chest high to me and thick enough that you can't see ANYTHING once it get 2-3 off the trail.
Anyway, I think I hear something and everything else.... birds, squirrels, cicadas... everything goes quiet. I sit there wondering what has came into the area that made everything go hush.
Shooting light passes and I gather my stuff to walk out to the 4 wheeler parked about 200-300 yards away. I get out of the blind, sling my rifle & start to walk. I go less than 25 yards and absolutely every hair on my body stands on end and goosebumps from head to toe. I immediately know something, man or beast, is watching me.
It creeped me out to the point that I rechambered a round in the rifle and drew my pistol as well. I walked for another 20 yards or so with an erie feeling of being followed. I stopped to try and look around but can't see anything, start to take another step when I heard this horrible and scary scream that sound kinda human but kinda not at the same time. It couldn't have been more than 50' away from me but I just could not see into the brush to determine what it was or, if I needed to, to shoot to defend myself.
I don't really remember making it back to the 4 wheeler, but I did and hightailed it back to camp.
I couldn't make myself go back to the blind the next morning. I just packed up and went to the house and didn't go back this past weekend.
I'm good now and will be heading back after thanksgiving dinner to either meet my destiny or hunt..... whichever comes first

If I believed in Big foot, then that might be a possibility, but as of right now, I can't say that I believe!
Yep, it was an Ole Wood Ape if I actually believed in them which I don't. lol This property actually sits about a mile as the crow flies from a few documented sightings of the infamous Wood Ape (Sasquatch). I was giving my boys an earful about the sightings on the way to this property yesterday and then this happened.

Another side note: probably the best part of the story. My son wanted me to walk down to get them when it was too dark and I said nope, y'all have to walk to me. I took this opportunity to hide right off the trail they had to walk down in some palmetto's. I heard them coming way off in the distance and could see a flash light going every which direction. They were hauling tail up that trail at a record pace! As soon as they rounded the corner and past me by a few yards, I rattled them palmetto's loud then all hell broke loose with them two! Both of them yelled and their body's made movements they aren't supposed to do. They thought that Ol Wood Ape was fixing to eat em!!

I don't know fellas, definitely wasn't an owl either. I'm going to do a bit more research to figure out exactly what it was. The explanation is out there.

Wow, way to kick them while they are down.

Now you have no excuse for them never wanting to hunt again.

I had a couple of guys try to scare me like this when we were looking for a deer I'd shot in the South Texas brush. They started making growling noises. I was about 75% sure it was them. I unholstered (just in case something was about to make a snack out of me) and shined my light towards my pistola. They changed the noises they were making, pretty quickly!
                That's a bizarre encounter y'all had!

I've heard it to hunting up by Stubblefield. It will make you pucker real fast, I've actually heard it also when I was hunting the Wilderness area east of there off 149 too. I've ran into the Sasquatch hunters up there, that swear it's one.

I had just got down one night and had started walking in out of the bottom and heard a growling enhale and loud howl like calling. It was too dark to see horns but thought about going back and getting in the stand to see if I might get a look or shot. I was on a sand trail and not useing a light so didnt believe it sinced me plus had the wind to my face. I just froze and listened. It did this several times and I thought back and have never heard a large cat, hog, buck make any noise like this, it sounded big. It sounded like it was closer than 50 yrds could hear it breathing like a snoring and yelling. I eased on out to the hay meadow and could hear the boys on a four wheeler making their way to the house and it shut up. I got up to the house and it started again. Then another not as loud yelled back like a smaller one or female from the woods on the other side of a 50 ac hay meadow. I went in and told my dad to come out here and listen to this. My oldest said he heard the one not as loud earlier behind him about an hour before dark. We listened to them for about 20 minutes as they went down the edge of the hay meadow yelling back and forth at each other until we couldnt hear them anymore. We lit up the edges of the hay meadow with spot light and they were just far enough in the woods to not see them and didnt come out. I have been hunting this country for almost 50 years and my dad longer and have never heard anything like this.

My wife was hunting with my yougest a couple weeks ago and got to hear her first big cat scream. She said that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

Hearing the unmistakable sound of a big cat screaming, and then the realization that the cat is somewhere between you, and where you parked your truck, and it's almost the end of legal shooting hours, and you have to walk back in that direction.

Maybe two boar coons fighting. Made me leave a sand bar one night in a really big hurry. Never heard anything like that close up before and all of a sudden my .22 pistol didn't seem near big enough.

I realize it is highly unlikely given the area but axis bucks make some outright bizarre guttural growls and screams. I say this only because it's Texas and you never know. Last year a red stag wondered onto waltrip highschool grounds. I've been with people that have never heard axis buck vocalizing and they would swear it was a monster. Any "game" ranches nearby?
