How long is too long? Advice needed!

Need details. Where did he hit him, how far did he go, blood trail, what BH?

He hit him quartering away from a little 100 yds with a 25.06. Deer immediately went down but when he went to get it with the truck he jumped and ran.

We tracked for 2 hours or so in the dark for him before we jumped him again around 8 PM.

Blood trail was decent. Went from dime sized drops to large pumps and back again.

Found him about 300 yards from where we spooked him last night and about 1000 yards in total.
