I've been wanting a small dog that I can go hunt with and it also be a good family dog. I have had rat terriers all my life, but I am thinking about getting a Jack Russell. My buddy has a shorty Jack and it is a hunting and tracking machine! My question is, is there a difference in the drive between a shorty Jack and a normal size Jack Russell?

I had one, and he was a psycho little bugger from day 1. We got him at 6 weeks old. They have the problem solving skills and intelligence of a toddler. Mine learned how to escape from the kitchen by bumping a chair, jumping on a the chair, then table then over the guard gate. He also learned how to escape his kennel by running in circles then throwing himself into the corner causing it to collapse and he would get out.......They say JRT's train you, you don't train them. Finally got rid of him when he would snap at my wife when it was time to put him his crate (one he couldn't escape from) for the day.

Mine took to it with zero training also. Dogs of all breeds are individuals IMO. I don't think you can generalize too much. My JRT loves to play and rough house with my son and has since he was a pup. He would however, growl at anyone who messed with his food for the first couple years. He doesn't now and hasn't for a few years. He will still snap on occasion when surprised, but he's snapping at air, not the person. Just a little warning !very intelligent dog and a joy to this family. He rides with me a lot, even trips of several hours. Wakes me up at night if he needs to poop
, but holds his bladder from bedtime to when I get up most of the time. Great dog !

I've owned 4 and down to just 1 now. Extremely intelligent, super high drive when she wants but can literally lay around and chill all day too! She picked up blood trailing easily. I read all the stuff about not being good with kids, but not sure where that info comes from?
Mine will find the biggest dog in Petsmart and try to pick a fight. She thinks she is bullet proof! This of course is because they are fearless by nature but also because I didn't try hard enough to socialize her. In the last several years she started growling at her 4 legged mother. I think she was just trying to establish dominance. I could go on and on, but by now, you may kind of have the picture?
