The squirrels are back - and they are winning.

I have a bit of a squirrel problem. Once again squirrels have chewed a hole in the siding and taken up residence in the attic. I had this problem a couple years ago and I put out a live trap. I was able to catch 5-6 over a few months and killed a few more with the pellet gun . I repaired the hole and no more problem. Apparently I just weeded out the stupid ones. This time around, as soon as I walk outside these buggers don't just run higher in the tree and then stop and wait to be shot, they run tree to tree until they are in the next county. They have also figured out the live trap - won't go in no matter what tasty morsels I bait it with.

So the question - what type of "snap trap" will work for tree rats and what bait should I use?

Hang a rubber snake next to the hole.

The big Victor rat traps with corn or peanuts wired or glued to the trigger. Be sure to tie the traps so they don't drag them off.

These were might thoughts as well.

I set a few live traps out a few months ago. Crunchy Peanutbutter and shelled pecans. And have the population down greatly. There's still a few. But they don't invade the pecan tree anymore.

Look-n like a record crop of pecans this year!

I don't know if the little savages will eat "Havoc", but i'd throw a couple of packets in the attic and find out. Other than that, set up a tripod and get a nice Benjamin .17 and play Jerp and squirrel with 'em.

Those buggers are smart. I hate 'em.

I've caught at least a dozen in Bridger Body Gripper traps. I turned them on their side and put some tape on the trigger and then superglued sunflower seeds to the tape. Never had a squirrel escape one.

conibears will kill the snot out of them. You can put them on fence runs, trees, or holes in the attic.

edit: txag beat me to it.

I had a similar problem with them chewing on my house that I painted early this spring. First time I saw chewing on my freshly painted house it was all out war after that. I positioned a birdfeeder with all kinds of goodies so that I could safely shoot my Gamo from my back door. 18 tree rats down and I haven't seen a squirrel in three months not to mention I might actually make a pecan crop this year

Zach used to set up a blind (leaned an old door up against the fence) and wait for them to come back out, and then he'd pop 'em with the pellet gun. If you have an afternoon to kill, that can be fun. Otherwise all the other ideas are way more efficient.

Conis are good stuff for trap-n most anything.

I guess kill-n 15 of those things last year up till all the pecans dropped helped a lot too. The rest got a pass as long as they stayed out of the tree, and left the good pecans alone in the yard.

My neighbor and I are up to 47 in two spring/summers in our subdivision for the very same reason. Destructive bastages...

We are the most successful with live traps using corn and peanut butter mixed in a chicken or tuna can wired in the end of the cage..

For the smart ones I bought some 110 MAGNUM conibears and rigged them like I read on youtube. They are both successful but the one outside on the board is the most successful. I have also caught several big arse field rats with them as well coming in from property next to our subdivision owned by the state I guess. The traps are cheap and fun....but they you gotta be careful with them. They will hurt like the dickens if you aren't paying attention and let one get you.

I also caught 2 in the big Victors traps outside mentioned above. Caught a crap load of rats too from that field

Connibear box trap I built. Worked good in my attic.
