    I'm 57....

and have been on Lipitor forever it seems. First 40 mg's then 20's. Part of mine is hereditary and part of it has been my diet. At one time my Triglycerides were so high they could not accurately calculate my total cholesterol. The best I ever did was quit eating starchy foods like potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, etc. Got cholesterol down to 180 and that was 15 years ago. Hasn't been that low since. I have kept it in the low 200
s though. Doc doesn't seem too worried. I'm still taking the 20 mg's errrry day!

I had it as a teenager. I may still have it 17 years later.

I am working on it through diet and exercise. I hope your doc doesn't think you need meds right now but goes for the easier methods.

I never realized how much fat I consumed and actually, it wasn't the amount of fat, but the ratio of fat as total calories. Mostly, I only needed to increase my leafy green veggies intake.

So, I make a concentrated effort to have spinach with my scrambled eggs (I really like it) and to eat green vegetables with dinner. Increasing plant sterols is the ticket. (Metamucil works, too, but cramps my stomach.)

White carbs are out - no bread, potatoes or white rice, instead I substitute sweet potatoes and wild or brown rice.

As a kick start, you can take red yeast extract with CO-Q10. The fish oil never did a thing for me. And neither did Niacin. In fact, my doc said research has shown that niacin does not impact cholesterol either way.

I take daily 2 non-flush niacin, 1 krill oil, 1 red wine capsule, 2 red rice yeast with coq10, garlic capsule, cinnamon capsule, vitamin c multi vitamin, baby aspirin, and drink a Metamucil drink everyday.

Couldn't have said it better. Do some research on statins before you just believe everything the "expert" tells you.

Great to see I'm not alone. High ldl, low hdl, high glucose, triglycerides 6 times optimal level, and high blood pressure. I'm 36.

Mine was close to 285, then I started taking Krill Oil and CholestOff over the counter. At my last doctor appointment, she ran a blood test and wanted me to increase the total fish oil to 2400 mg a day. My total cholesterol has been 192-205 for years now. However my bad cholesterol is high. No doctor (the last 4-5 I've had have moved away) has ever suggested taking an Rx for high cholesterol, though I've been on blood pressure medicine for about 10 years now and I'm 51 years old now.
