Pretty much nailed it.
I've been lucky enough to hunt everything from dove to teal to pheasant to sandhill crane to greater canada geese all over the country with my near-decade old Stoeger 2000 w/3" chamber and have never had a hiccup or fail (knock on wood). She doesn't get cleaned as often as my dad would've liked, in fact he probably would've beat me with it if he knew how I treated her, but she cycles any trap loads all the way up to the biggest 3" mag goose loads you can find, and without without fail.
1) The spectrum of load choices and 2) the fit (length of pull) are the two biggest things, in my honest opinion, when it comes to buying a new shotgun. Back when I sold guns at a local sporting goods store in college those were the two factors I would stress because at the end of the day recoil is recoil and it's all manageable.
If several different guns fit you well and you're not worried about shooting lighter loads out of it, then the next attribute I would recommend is Benelli's Inertia Drive.
Good luck!
