Like most of these threads I need two glasses of wine just to start.
I haven't shot over a 400gr arrow for 10 years. I never shoot over 285fps and don't have a clue what my foc, energy, mom or burp is. I have serious doubts the 8 elk or the caribou I killed at 84yds in that time really cared. I seriously doubt there is any one who couldn't improve their aiming if they dropped 4 or 5 pounds of bow weight.
I guess I need to quit now, I had to proof read this 5 times.

Impressive record there. But not everyone has the skill and nerve to shoot apples off of their own kid's head!

You have taken animals with light arrows and long distance. I'm glade you posted. We need to always remember. It can be done. But for me I take advantage of the heavy arrow and efoc. There are always going to be this debate. This has been a good post. Thanks old killer for coming on

It's like killing with a 22. It can be done. I believe there is on record where an elephant was taken with a 22. But why take the chance.

I believe in building arrows for the game I'm hunting.

Like Muddy said, Black Eagle arrows are easy to build with a high FOC. Although I am shooting a heavy arrow compared to most, 595 grains, I still get a 19-20% FOC out of the builds using insert weights (150 grains) and a 125 grain head.

Like I have said many times and will continue to say, shoot what you want as long as the bow is tuned, the arrow is tuned to the bow, the BH is strong and sharp and you have the confidence in what you are shooting and your ability to use that equipment and you place that arrow where it needs to be and everything will work out.

It is still a blast to read about all the different set ups and what all think about speed, arrow weight, FOC and anything else, BH style, but sometimes it makes my head hurt!

My setup last year was 434gr and about 12%foc. I shot a buck from a ground blind sitting down low so I shot angled up a bit. Normally I would shoot big expandables on most animals especially deer but this time grabbed my exodus heads. I found that arrow 62 steps from where the deer was standing.

I want to play with a heavier arrow with more FOC eventually but really have no reason other than toying with it.

A good fixed head and properly tuned bow will blow through everything we have in the states. A bow not tuned is probably the number one reason for poor penetration even with expandables IMO
