    Splitting fence cost with neighbor

Just seeing what y'all would do. Two years ago I had a fence put up and my neighbor offered to split our side but he never paid. He even mentioned it a few times that he needed to get me the money when I saw him but he never brought the cash/check over.

Now two years later the neighbor on the other side built a fence so all he has to do is complete from his house to our fences and his back fence so he's fully fenced in for 1/3 of the cost. We live on 1 acre lots so 2/3 is a lot of savings.

My neighbor just texted me about tying his fence into mine. My reply was, "I don't remember you paying for 1/2 of it two years ago. Let me check my records and if you paid feel free to tie into our fence. If not, we need to discuss further"

    How would y'all handle it?

You did the right thing. Once he pays for half the fence, he can tie on. However, I tried that and they just set another corner post which didn't touch my fence. However, I put the fence 6" or so on my property. Eventually, the fence was rebuilt and they paid for half. We then put the fence on the true property line.

You handled it well. Good luck on getting things worked out for the best. Good fences make good neighbors.

You have a butt load of fence
In my opinion you did the right thing
          That is a big expense

Sad that he couldn't settle it before now. We have always split the cost or paid for materials & neighbor supplied labor for new fences.

Was the neighbor, on the other side, living there when you set the new fence? If no, let him do it. If yes, AND YOU CONFRONTED HIM ABOUT SPLITTING THE COST, and he then shot it down... yes you can begin him for money, but I don't think there is a way to get it...

If you go ahead and do it on your own, that's your deal. But if 100% of the posts are on your property, you can whine about the use of said posts for brackets.

I on the other hand, would be happy I got the fence I wanted, and would let them have the privilege of attaching some small, harmless brackets on my fence posts...

We just put up a little under 3 miles of fence and not one neighbor offered to help with the cost labor ect. We didnt ask either but they sure came out with a nice pretty new fence! We still let them tie into it... no reason to get into it with the neighbors. Part of me wanted to tell them no but just aint worth it.

Offer same thing to the neighbor, said he could not afford it. So, I paid for it in full. Put the smooth side out which is what I wanted and he complained it didn't match the rest of his fence. We had a talk that ****** him off but what the heck, he who does not pay has no say.

Next time he offers to split something, I'd pay half and tell the contractor to go see him about the other half!

Yes he was and we agreed before it was built. Even a few months after he was telling me he would get me a check but never did.

Yea I dont think a fence is worth fighting with a neighbor over, but I did want to remind him of what he previous said. I probably wont ask again and just know in the future get money upfront from them.

I thought about that but it was SilentAssassin on here building the fence. He needed money up from to buy supplies. I helped Philip build it so they got off with a better rate than if i would have hired a regular fence contractor.

If he agreed to pay and you want the money, hold his feet to the fire and make him pay.

When the wildfire came through and took out a half mile of fence on our south side, I contacted our neighbor and he readily agreed to pay half but wanted me to file for reimbursement from the federal government. That would have meant that I would have had to register our land. I refuse to participate in anything of the sort as I figure what I do on my land is my business and responsibility. I don't want or need any bureaucrats telling me what or how to do things. I built and paid for the fence and never asked for him to share in the cost.
