    Do snake actually have that mental capacity to think they can't win? I thought they were more like just a creature that lives by sheer instinct...

      I think probably what happened was he wore himself out more than anything. Not so much with rattlesnakes but with bullsnakes and stuff you can hold them by the head so they can't bite and after a while they get somewhat used to you. Enough to where you can let them crawl around but even then there's no guarantee that they won't try to bite. I think it's like that with rattlesnakes to some degree but I wouldn't feel comfortable free handling one as if it were non-venomous. But I think once they realize you're not going to hurt them they tend to calm down and feel a little more comfortable.
