    Need Tractor Advice - shredding

So I went and bought a new rotary cutter today (land pride 6ft). The old shredder and this new one continually break the shear bolt. The tractor is an old case 1490 with a 70hp PTO and you have to try to jam it in gear to engage the PTO. Is there an adjustment that is affecting this or can I buy harder steal bolts? It seams the ones I have break way too easily either by getting the PTO in gear or by hitting a bump, even while driving slow?

    What does the GS say?

Is it a 1272 shredder if so you are over powering it. We sel that size on 30 to 40 engine horse tractors. Do not put a harder bolt in there or you will break the gear box. See if the dealership can install a slip clutch on it.

What bowtech said. The shear bolt is there to protect the other, more expensive parts.

put a grade 5 shear bolt in it. that's the first thing I did when I bought both my shredders. both still running fine. I was shearing bolts in thick grass or just by popping the clutch with the factory bolts (grade 2) I think. I can mow pretty thick brush with a grade 5 but will shear it on anything too big

You said you were having trouble getting the PTO engages?

I have a Kubota 705 and have the same shredder. I start my PTO and the lowest idle. Then increase after it settles down.

Thanks for the feedback all - I bought the 1272 because that's what they recommended at the Kubota place- he never said anythig about over-powering it. Yes I have it at the lowest idle when trying to engage but it will shear the bolt very easily and also when shredding slow.

Have you tried going back to the guy that recommended it and ask why this is happening?

What dealer did you get it from?

Sorry for thread jacking...but is this how it's supposed to be done? I honestly don't know. I engage the PTO while its at mowing speed. Should I engage the PTO at a lower idle speed?

You can get grade 5 bolts at Tractor Supply. That is what I use in mine.

Bought it st Ewald kubota on 71 outside of Austin. Just picked it up this afternoon. I'm using my wife's granddads tractor and am the only one who knows or has even tried to use it. It works great if you go slow and if you can get the PTO the engage the deck

On land prides site they have that rated at 50 hp. I would try a slip clutch on that
