We had two fall over in the high winds. The branches had been falling off for a while. The drought damaged the root system and the tree was trying to preserve itself. When those heavy winds came through it uprooted. I would say drought damage.

Here is a good reference of Key to Diseases of Oaks in the Landscape

This publication contains a guide to diseases of oak trees in the landscape.

          Jerp,
Check the trunk for small holes as borers are also a possibility.

We had some bug come through our community last year and just by the bug landing on the tree, the tree dies and it started very similar to this look. I am trying to remember the bugs name. Several neighbors lost a path of trees across their property and it kept going until it left the community. The arborist told them to cut the trees, so it looks like a power line right of way.

Also, do you see other trees with a similar look? if so, is there a pattern, it may be this bug.

Anyone else heard of the bug?

              Todd

If the roots on only one side are damaged then it will probably make it. Some limbs will probably have to be removed as they will slowly die.
