Any idea what is killing this tree?

When this tree started leafing out this Spring I noticed several
large limbs had died over the winter. The rest of the tree looked normal
until a couple of weeks ago when the leaves started turning gray/brown and falling off. The limbs with leaves are still supple like they are healthy. Any ideas?

I have a post oak that the leaves are turning yellowish brown. Not sure what's going on either but I remember it had some green leaves at the very top in the middle of the winter which I thought was strange. I have 100's of post oaks and only have the different color leaves on that 1 oak.

Maybe root damage from too much water.

        Tagged.

I have an oak that's losing leaves for the second time since budding out. Not all the leaves just a few. Maybe 50 since I mowed sunday but those are brown

Your best bet would be to call out an arborist and get a professional opinion.

Too much water killed a customer of mine's..There was a city water pipe that had been penetrated by it's roots.
I've seen getting too close with pre emergent cause them to de foliate as well.

Oak wilt attacks Live Oaks mostly as far as what I've seen.I'm not an arborist, but I've cut down a ton that were affected by wilt.
I'll do some research, but I think Red Oaks are for the most part spared.

Oak wilt will ravage a red oak too

Any chance you poured copper sulfate down a drain line?

Other than that I would think oak wilt or some other disease/fungus

Where have you removed trees infected with Oak Wilt?

The Ops Red Oak is not Oak Wilt. Without seeing the soil conditions, and entire tree, i would guess that its either too much water or root decay. The drought we had from 2010-2013 killed a ton of roots and trees that have looked healthy since with damaged roots, are very susceptible to root rot (root decay) with all the moisture we've been getting this spring/summer. I would call a local arborist. Make sure their either very experienced or is ISA Certified.

This the same as "heart rot"?

Red oaks can get wilt also but are not as susceptible to it

This is quite possible. The ground in that area of the yard has remained pretty saturated for several months. Is the tree likely to die from root rot or might it recover as things dry out?
