Infection is always a concern. However, according to Medicare.gov, the national rate of complications for hip/knee replacement patients is only 3.1%, and that includes seven other issues beyond infection. The national rate of "serious complications" is only 0.81.

That is good to hear. Don't have much of a choice if I want to be mobile so I hope I am in the 96.9% of the Ill be ok group.

They will have you up and walking that same day. Make sure you do the rehab and you will be fine
Forgive me if this isn't what you were hoping to hear:

My brother had a partial knee replacement about 9 years ago. It didn't work out well for him and he had to go back on within a year and do a total replacement.

I did a total knee replacement in 2011 and was walking without crutches or a walker within 5 days. Best move I've ever made. Was able to get much more exercise and regained ability to walk distances. Lost 40lbs afterwards!

I asked my Dr. (Sherwin Sifff at Texas Bone & Joint / St. Luke's in Houston) about a partial and he said he won't do them. Too many failures.

I'm going to have to do something soon with mine and don't want to do either full or partial.

Having a total knee replacement done next Wednesday. People I have talked too that's had it done said their only regret was not having it done sooner. They also said to be sure to follow doctors orders including therapy. Like you, I am also nervous but, looking forward to not having the constant pain! Best of luck to you!

Thank you Pineywoods. That is what I am asking for the good and the bad cause I have the ugly wrapped up. Thanks for you input.

I think it depends on the person. My dad and my uncle both had one. My uncle outweighs my dad by 80lbs, same height, one year apart. My dad had more "damage" from sports, my uncles just wear. My uncle was up and running in 6-8 weeks, my dad on the other hand is still hurting pretty bad. They used the same doc and had full knee replacements. My dad had his back in March, and is still limping around, and they are playing with the idea of another surgery to remove scar tissue. I hear most people are back at it pretty quick. And yea, you'll be walking the day you have surgery and starting PT in the hospital.
