I wish I still had the picture of one a buddy of mine found when he was mowing a few years ago. The longest Eastern Hognose on record was 46" long. The one he found was every bit of 4 foot long, maybe a little longer. There's no tellin what it is now if it's still alive.

Eastern Hognose according to the snake experts on WHAT KIND OF SNAKE IS THIS? NORTH TEXAS. It's a Facebook group with some very knowledgable people. I'm learning a lot. I posted the pic there and got a positive ID within minutes.

I thought we here at TBH were the definitive experts at snake identification. Who are these amateurs you speak of?

Of course we're the experts, but from time to time, we let these amateurs speak up. This particular group of "wanna-bes " are a bunch of herpatologist. I've actually learned a lot, er, taught them a thing or two.

Funny. So many definite answers thrown out based on a blurry picture. I wonder how many hognose and other harmless snakes get mistakenly chopped by our "experts".

I thought this snake ID went pretty well. It only took three trys to get it.
