An hour observing applicants is a great screening tool.
Well I suppose I should rephrase that then. If I was told I had a 1 hour interview, and the "interview" lasted 2 hours, that Is an inaccurate representation. If I was told to expect 2 or 3 hours no problem. Unfortunately I, like many people, try to schedule multiple things in a day. If one of those intentionally is made to run over, then there are problems. I understand things happen though.

I never told anyone how long their interview might last. My assistants told them what time to show up. Their formal interview generally started an hour after that. It was a three stage process and very effective. The formal interview usually was about 15 minutes. Those that were recommended for hire were called back later to interview with me.

Many applicants showed their true colors sitting right there waiting that hour without realizing they were being observed and screened. It sounds like you would have never made it through the second stage if you had a problem with the interview process running a couple hours.

Any time you apply for a position, its important to remember that you are being assessed from the first moment, not just while you have your game face on. If you came to me looking for work and had an attitude that i was wasting your time, it wouldnt take me long to stop wasting your and my time.

If someone asks how long to expect the interview to last do you give them an accurate estimate? I have no problem with making them wait an hour, or 2 hours, or 6 hours, as long as they are told how long it will take If they request that information. While an applicant shouldn't view it as a waste of time, the employer also needs to have a certain level of respect for the applicants time. As I mentioned before, I don't like to be late, and I don't like it when other people are late.

NO! First off, its an assistant or HR person screening applications and scheduling interviews. The actual interview process is three stage. The better the applicant, the longer the process will run. If they were an azz in the lobby, their interview will be just a few seconds. If they get past that screen, the interview process will run about 15 minutes. and if they are a must hire, they may be referred to me right then for a longer , more indebth interview. If they had other commitments we could always schedule a later date and I generally do that anyway.

If an applicant showed up and started talking smack about not having time for this in less than an hour, I certainly dont need them on my team.

Well I'm glad this works out for you. I guess I just schedule my day out a little more then your average applicant.
