It's a Remote ! I dated a girl from Oklahoma once who religiously referred to that "thing" as the channel selector.

I say wheres the tivo, as opposed to the Roku or the tv remote.....got too many of em.....but they are all remotes

I remember using the actual clicker on the tv. Each button made a different frequency "click" that would make the tv do something. I had gotten to where I could clap my hands just right to make the channel change so I didn't have to look for the clicker.
