    Yikes, Rattlebug Bite

A teen was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital by LifeFlight after he was bitten by a rattlesnake along the dunes area of Surfside Beach.

I didn't think diamond backs were up this close to Houston.

I know Timber bugs are in East Texas but dang, too close to home.

Yup along the coast they're lots of diamond backs. They don't make it very far inland though. Brazoria and Matagorda beaches are full of them.

Yup, we were staying at the Dunes Condo's two years ago in Matagorda and I killed one on the foot bridge to the pool with a broken shovel handle.

Scary thing, it was at night and I had stayed behind to fish the lake. Two kids walked right by it but the dog didn't, she had it cornered and thankfully no-one was bit.

Good to know, I wouldn't have thought that.

When my brother flew with a helicopter survey after Ike, he was astounded by the number of dead rattlers he saw around Galveston.

A friend of mine killed one in his pond a couple weeks ago in Moss Hill. That's at least 50-60 miles inland. I grew up here and have never heard of one being found out here. Dealing with the cottonmouth and copperhead snakes is bad enough, now dang rattlbugs

Yep. When we had a house in Chinquapin, we killed rattle snakes all the time.

yep, it's crazy the number of rattlers around there.

when we stayed there the dunes were full of them, and not a sign nowhere warning of their presence. we already were aware of them but you can be sure that a lot of visitors are not.

The West End of Galveston is full of em. Not only in the Dunes but also around those canal sub-divisions. Here is one my buddy killed at his canal home back around Thanksgiving in Isla Del Sol right next to Sea Isle.

My first job out of forestry school was for Galveston County Beach and Parks in 1978.

We built Beach Pocket Park #2. I was the park keeper for two years and lived in the beach house there. During construction we killed lots of snakes. Two friends had their dogs bit while visiting. One was an Irish Setter. He came in the garage with a pygmy rattler hanging onto his foot. The other was a black lab. Two big fang marks to his face. That dog was never the same. Both survived.

Diamondbacks and pygmy rattlers were the most common. Also killed several cottonmouths.
