    Machetes

I am looking for a good quality machete. Mainly for South Texas brush/cactus whacking. After my latest trip down there to hunt, I realized I need to add one to my gear list.

    What does the GS recommend.

Not a machete but I like my Woodsman's Pal better than any machete I have used.

Cold steel has some good ones.

          Caterpillar!
If not that look around TSC for a brush axe, (probably not the right name) looks like an upside down J mounted on an axe handle. Works pretty darn good on brush keeps you back away from high velocity whip backs and hefty enough to tackle bigger stuff if need be.

Ditch bank blade may work for you. Gives a little room to swing it and can take down large saplings

Big fan of my cold steel kukri, probably to short of a profile to be swinging into cactus though

Tramontina brand, they come from colombia very good steel with plenty flexibility. I had a cold Steel very stiff steel broke in half chopping a mesquite limb.

I keep a cold steel kukri on my four wheeler and its done the job from brush to mesquite. It holds a decent edge and carries easy enough. I believe it was in the $20 range. It's going on 3 years of duty.

I have a Tramontina and a Cold Steel, both for use in South Texas. I have been very pleased with both of them.

In on this. I'm gonna want a good machete for my Hilltop lot. Didn't like what I saw at Academy. Neighbor used to use the Woodsman and I'd like to find one of those.
Academy had a Camillus that looked bad to the bone but I don't want to buy on looks.

About as good as you can get and a great value. I have three of them.

Yep. I know some people like a flimsy thin one, I dont, I grew up using em and love the ontario ones. Thick, solid machete.

I have had great service out of the Gerber machete that Academy sells. I have 2 of them, one for my Honda Pioneer I use in East Texas and one I keep in my ranch truck out west. They are very durable and just flexible enough to work well on springy, limber brush. The long handle knife is also a good one... the "J" shape on an axe handle described above. They are also called a surveyor's knife or a Kaiser blade. There are several sizes of these. I'd suggest the smaller one. I have both, and that big sucker is just to heavy and cumbersome to work effectively. The smaller ones can actually be used one handed like a machete... good for brush/cactus with thorns/stickers because of the long handle...
