Crossbow Got My Thumb Tip : Warning A Little Graphic

Went on a turkey/axis hunt past 4 days. I took a axis doe and my wife got two nice Toms. Picked up my wife this morning from her stand and decided I'd shoot her crossbow (Barnett Predator) using an old bolt to unload it. I was holding it freehand and didn't realize my thumb was sticking up until I fired and immediately knew what had happened. 10 seconds later, the pain hit......and the blood. Luckily, I had a trauma pack with clotting packs and we got the bleeding stopped (we were 2 hours from the closest medical care). 8 stitches later and I've reinforced why I don't care for crossbows. I'm very thankful it was me and not my wife. The good news is after witnessing it, my wife wants to sell the crossbow and get a compound[emoji106]

I don't know how crossbows work, so I can't really picture what happened... I do know how thumbs work though, so I see the problem.

        Ouch!!

I did something similar last year with a pressure washer. I just rubbed some dirt on it and duct taped it for a few days.

Hurt like heck and I still don't feel much with that index finger.

        Hope it heals soon.

Stitches? For that? Rip it off, put a bandaid on keep on keeping on, lol

Ouch is all I can say. Everything that is easier is also easier to mess up with. Glad the missus wasn't hurt

Terrible sorry.. You are not alone. Busted mine up also on an old crossbow. It is very easy to get your thumb right into the way for the string. Glad you will be OK

That would have never happened with a longbow.

What a great husband sacrificing your body to teach your wife a valuable lesson about crossbows.

Congrats to her on the turkeys, and to you on the doe.

Wow. Glad it wasn't worse. I have tried to get my hands in the way with my son's crossbow and I can't reach. I am still going to show this to him.

It can happen easier than one would think. If your supporting hand thumb (or any of your fingers for that matter) is sticking up above the rails at all, when you pull the trigger, the pain is coming.
