Moles push up the dirt as they move. Gophers dig and push up the dirt in mounds every so often.

I had a cat that would pull the trap up and eat the gopher off of it. Then I accidentally ran over it. I miss that cat. R.I.P Vato the gato

That's a gopher, not a mole!!

Yep, but you really don't have to cover the hole. Once you find the tunnel, just stick trap in and walk away.
And if you have time, pull up a chair, a cold beer, and a 22. Shoot'em in the head when they come to close the hole up!!!

Yep and yep. I usually do it in the morning when they are making new mounds. I use a pellet gun or 22.
