Any Apple Airport/Wifi/Networking Experts?

I have a question about making my apple airport "visible" to my Ubiquiti Wireless access point. What I want to do is connect an iphone/ipad, etc to the ubiquiti AP and be able to play music to the airport that is connected to a stereo.

The airport and the ubiquiti AP are both hard-wired to my router. The router, the airport and the ubiquiti all provide wifi access through 3 ssid. If connected to the airport wifi or router wifi, you can play music from your iphone to the airport which is connected to a stereo. However, if you're connected to the ubiquiti, which is really our main wifi in the house, the airport is not an option for speakers on your iphone.

Can anyone help me get a device connected to the ubiquiti AP to play to the airport?

I'll ask my son for you. He may know....if not, he'll figure it out. He built a server for our home that we can download pictures to from our iphones and iPads. He can remotely manage the server. We can also access his server in San Francisco to watch his movies on his sever.

He lives for stuff like this. Like he said....it's his bowhunting!

i could be wrong so feel free to ignore. I think in order to get that to work the ubiquiti needs to be set up as an access point off of the airport. router-airport-ubiquiti.

usually done to extend range of wifi that way for large homes/spaces.

why do you have two access points coming off router?

I believe the limitation in setting up the Express in bridged mode with your non Apple router is within that router itself. I'm failing to remember the actual compatibility that is needed on the router for it to work with the Express.

Have you plugged the airport into your laptop via ethernet? Maybe are you on a PC vs Mac? Mac has airport utility for set up. Not sure about PC.

Reset the Express and configure it with the lowest encryption and see if you can bridge them that way first.

MY first assumption would be that the Ubiquiti has built in DHCP. That means that the Ubiquiti hands out IP address' and is creating its own network. This will cause what you are talking about. I'll look farther into it.

Do you have the Aiport Utility installed on your local computer? If so, you need to connect to the Airport Express and configure it with the following settings on the "wireless" tab:



This will allow your Airport Express to show up as an airplay device on your other iOS and OSX devices. Make sure Airplay is turned on in the "Airplay" tab of the configuration also.

If your airport express has some weird settings and you want to reset it to start over, press the little grey button on the back for about 10 seconds using a paper clip.

If the ubiquiti access point is one of the unifi ap then it doesn't issue DHCP but they still might be on different subnets (most likely) and thats why they can't talk to each other but you can access the internet fine.

His Airport Express will participate in the same network by basically becoming just another endpoint just like any other computer/phone. This way it won't subnet itself but rather be on the same primary subnet.

Effectively this turns the Airport Express into an Airplay Server (and a print server if you plug one in.)

Even if DHCP is off, he can manually assign one to the Airport Express in the Airport Utility.

Here is a diagram of the setup. Both the airport and ubiquiti are hard-wired to the router. If the phone is connect to the wifi of the router or airport, airplay to the stereo works (blue lines). Connect phone to ubiquiti wifi, no airplay.

Do you still suggest what you suggest after seeing this? I'm not sure how strong the signal will be from ubi to airport but it will likely pick it up. However, I do like the idea of using as much ethernet as possible.
