I cant speak for all government agencies but I work for the USDA and have been in my most recent location just over a year. They are in the process of going to regional HR teams instead of state HR teams to do hiring now so someone in Carolina may be the contact for a posting, this is a problem because an HR official may have 10 times the number of job postings to deal with than they did before. Other agencies may not be this way but that is what is making the USDA hiring process slower.

My experience with applying for jobs through USAJOBS and my wife as well has been that you usually hear about being referred but seldom hear if you were not selected. Your best bet is to look at the posting and there should be an HR contact listed, give them a call and ask the status of your application. That will at least let you know if you're being considered.

Thanks. I took your advice and emailed the contact for a job with fema I wanted, and they told me they hired someone else, which sucks but at least I know.

In my experience have a General Resume and create 3-4 others for job areas you're interested in. When a job comes open, Print off the job description and edit the resume closest to it to include "Catch Words" listed in the ... Knowledge, Skills, Assessment section of the Job description. Don't sugar coat it because during the job interview this will come to the surface.

Took me 8 years to find my dream job but its worth it ... Good Luck.
