    Talk me out of buying a 6.7 Powerstroke

    Recently purchased a 14 GMC Sierra 1500 and am now trying to decide if I want to keep it go with a 11 or 12 ish F250 Powerstroke.

    Not necessarily looking for the debate of whether I need it or not, but whether swapping a late model 1/2 tone for an older 3/4 6.7 is worth it?

    What is the realistic longevity of that engine with typical daily driving, occasional pulling? Thanks!

    6.7 is a beast!!! I drive it daily and pull occasionally. Really solid engine.

      From what I hear it's almost as good as a 7.3. Way more reliable than the 6.0, 6.4

        Best decision you will make I have had 2 and no problems whatsoever. I have them at work as well and there pushing 200k + and no issues as well. Best truck I have ever had.

          I was listening to an automotive talk show the other day.

          It was their opinion that the 6.7 will go down in history as being as good or better than the 7.3L.

            As long as you do regular fuel system maintenance they are great! Good friend is a diesel mechanic and says he is constantly replacing fuel systems in trucks that aren't maintained!

              So this is what my wife is having a hard time wrapping her head around...Trading a pretty new low mileage truck, for an older 90k+ mileage truck for about the same money...

              How do I get this point across?

                    I'll assume we are talking an even trade, price wise. It only worth it if you NEED a diesel. Plain and simple, if you don't tow heavy loads or plan on putting HUNDREDS of thousands of miles on the truck its not worth it. If you only tow occasionally with light (less than 10-12k) and plan on trading the truck in with less than 300k its probably not worth it.

                    From the OP it sounds like you won't be putting the miles on the truck to make to longevity worth it, or using the truck enough for towing. So keep the newer lower mileage gasser. If it was worth it, you could come up with some reasons

                      I would love to be able to snag a truck and stick with it for 10+ years. Towing would be tandem trailer with gator or 24' bay boat. Would it not be worth it for longevity sake?

                        how many miles is 10 years? If you're driving 15k a year and will have less than 200k in 10 years stick with the gasser. If you're driving 30k a year and will end up with close to 400k in 10 years the diesel might be more attractive due to resale price.

                        With a gator? no.

                        I've got no idea how heavy that boat is as I live way far from the coast

                          At what point (mileage) to semi major repairs start creeping in? Assuming light use and well maintained?

                            What do you pull,and how often.
                            You will spend the same in fuel and triple on maintenance.
                            You will also spend at least double on any repairs.

                              Really no telling.

                              I'll hit 300k on my '04 Duramax in a couple months and I've had some problems, some semi major.

                              Had my rear end go out around 30k miles ago. Not crazy expensive to fix. Probably the biggest problem.

                              Had my injectors replaces under warranty at around 140k, but it was a known problem on that truck.

                              Have had lots of smaller problems, that were all relatively cheap to fix. But these happen to all trucks regardless of engine or make/model.

                              These have been 300k not easy miles and the truck has not been babied. But it has been maintained.
