You are correct about the books. If you like the movie and like to read...... The books are way better.
I have read them all, numerous times. Was kinda thinkin about selling them so somebody else could enjoy them

I may have found the right place to find a buyer LOL

This is viewed as backwards by most, but I'm sorta glad I watched the movie before I got into the books. It gave me a picture in my mind of all the characters and what their voices sound like. So don't let seeing the movie first turn you away from the books!

The set is mostly all gone now. Check this link out (or don't if you don't want to be depressed)

A fiend of mine has a good bit of the props from the movie at his place. Even built a saloon that has the bar Gus bounced the bartenders head off of. I have had the pleasure of drinking way too many leaning on that bar.

I have taught LD for over 20 years to my English classes and have developed quite a unit. I have watched the movie well over 500 times by my last count and have never noticed Willie's name before. Great stuff. Maybe Bill Wittliff's son will chime in. He is a member here. I have compiled a lengthy list of quotes that my students are responsible for learning and will share them via email if you care to have them. Just shoot me a PM with an email address and I'll send you a copy. Also, for those that haven't been, you need to take a drive to Texas State and see the Wittliff collection at the Alkek library. Great collection of all the props from the movie. Really neat display but sure wish it was about three times the size it is.

The court house that Blue Duck grabbed the deputy and jumped out of the window with him was built in the middle of the street at the Alamo Village.

The owners of the Alamo Village wanted the court house to be left but the director of the film had it torn down.

The ranch house which was supposed to be the horse ranch in Nebraska was actually built South of Angel Fire New Mexico in the valley of the Black Canyon. It was torn down after the filming too.

don't start the book unless you have quite a bit of free time coming up. ld will obsess you like no other. as far as mcmurtry's books, the earlier ones are his best. last picture show should highest on your wish list, imo.

I have seen that movie to many times to count but last night I was curious on where some of the filming took place because it looked familiar so I watched the rolling credits to see if it was on a ranch I hunted and that's when I seen Willies name roll up.
I can never get tired of that show and I hate to even start it in the middle of the week when I have to get up for work. I have read the books as well.

I read yesterday that James Garner was who they originally wanted to play Gus. He was having health issues and couldn't do it. Robert Duvall's ex wife read the book and told him if they ever made a movie of it he should play Gus. He says it is his favorite part of all time. At one point they wanted Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones to switch characters and they refused. My #1 movie of all time and Tombstone is #2.

My all time favorite movie.I have the DVD and watch it at least once a year.Pick a cold nasty day, pop some corn, kick back and watch it all the way through.Might do that today. The best line,"I hate rude behavior in a man--wont tolerate it."That quote would look good on my headstone!

I feel a bit embarrassed to say that I haven't watched Lonesome Dove.

Guess I'll have to watch it on our next lazy Sunday, and see what all the hoopla is about!
