Yes, you can probably make an outhouse for less than rental fees. They're big business.

We bought some land and wife is wanting a guest bathroom so they dont have to walk into our camper at night. Just exploring options. Not sure I want a stinking hole in the ground. But might rig up something that hooks up to a portable tank.

Look at composting toilets. Some commercial ones are pricy, but you can DIY.

We don't have fancy-pants walls around our outhouse, just a moveable seat (cant get more than a foot deep before hitting stone). We have it in the woods adjacent to camp.

For #1, you are looking at the restroom at the back of the cabin in this pic. Even have an aid for the lady guests

Gotta keep them cedar roots watered!

Last one I had had a 1965 dodge hood for a roof.

We used to keep a toilet riser chair (with a splash guard) and a shovel on the trail into the woods. Take them with you, find a spot, two scoops of dirt, set the chair in place, two scoops of dirt back, replace the chair and shovel for the next person. Worked great.

My kid gave me a Bumper Dumper for Christmas several years ago! It's in the tool box on the trailer, but I have yet to try it out!
