My wife and I, along with our two teenage brothers, will be headed to Ruidoso Jan 7th-11th. We have never been and looking for suggestions on what to do. We won't be skiing as we are going to be keeping cost down. We just are going to experience wintertime in the mountains. Any suggestions on food and activities would be great!

Breakfast at the Log Cabin restaurant on Meacham, and the two elk mounts on the wall will make your eyes bug out big time. Good burgers at Farley's on Meacham as well. Lincoln County Grill on Sudderth is a mom 'n pop type small restaurant with OK food and reasonable prices. Skiing on Ski Apache isn't cheap, but you can save a bit of $$ and time by renting equipment in town instead of on the mountain. Might also check conditions in Cloudcroft as prices there are considerably cheaper. If you want a nice meal in a semi-fancy restaurant, try Rebecca's in The Lodge in Cloudcroft as well.
Things to do--drive down to Alamogordo and visit White Sands. Kids can actually sled down the pure white dunes on the flat, round sleds. Cheaper to buy one at Big 5 sporting goods in Ruidoso than renting one at the park though. Also, there is the Smokey Bear Monument about 30 miles away, and Valley of the Fires maybe 20 miles farther.
Watch out driving in Ruidoso--town is full of mule deer which were forced out of the surrounding mountains by the 2012 fires and have taken up residence as the locals feed them.
We were there the week of Christmas, and no snow, but we left a day early due to the blizzard, so you'll have snow now.
