    Back To Bataan 2016

Some of you may remember that back in March I went out to White Sands Missile range to participate in the civilian "heavy" division of the Bataan Memorial Death March ("Heavy" means I carried a minimum of 35# of raw weight (not including food/water) on a 26.2 mile course throughout the range. You can find a recap here.) and today we started our 12 week training cycle in preparation of next years event.

It was chilly, and about 98% humidity this morning. Made for lots of cold sweat.

One change with this years training is that the guy who trained us up last year (And ALL of us completed the march with zero issues, it almost seemed like another training day) is deploying to Honduras next month on a nine month medical mission. So, for what ever reason possessed him, he has asked me to lead the team and run all the training rucks.

So I guess that means that instead of making snide comments about his route selection and zero sense of direction, I'll be the one everyone is poking fun at.

    Great.

Good for you. What's your pack and footwear selection?

Brings back memories of the 25 mile MCCRES humps with full gear, flak jackets, and crew served weapons. I think 8 hours was the target time.

I ruck a GORUCK GR0 with 40# steel plates for weight and wear Lowa Zephyr GTX boots with a silk liner sock and a Smartwool polypro outer.

And slather my feet with Trail Toes. Lots and lots of that.

So I didn't see it in your story... is the battery dead or are you out of gas?

I've never heard of this memorial march. I'm going to send the link to my friend whose father survived the Bataan Death March.

If you serve/d our country: THANK YOU!

If your friend doesn't mind, I'd love to carry his father's name and image on my ruck for the march this year. You can hit me up via PM if he wouldn't mind. There are lots of marchers on that route that carry images/names of the survivors/fallen from that war and others.

And no thanks are necessary, at least not to me. Just a lowly reservist who got spun up for Desert Storm and by the time we were ready to step off, Chew and his merry band of misfits took care of business.

Such an awesome thing to do Mark. Can't believe you're doing it again. Keep us posted weekly as to your progress if you don't mind.

8.11 miles this morning in a cold and steady rain. But, you have to put the miles in...

I know it'll be dang near important with 6000+ people there, but hopefully we can meet up. If you see a cat in a kilt with a ruck, it'll probably be me.

The kilt part makes me nervous but your outstanding avatar restores my confidence

Do you camp at White Sands?

No, we stay in El Paso on the west side of town off Airport road. It's not a bad road to the back gate at White Sands.
