    Targeting a specific Boar Hog

The last 3 mornings, from my house, I've seen a very large boar hog run across my neighbor's hay pasture, into my small wooded area and then run across my hay pasture. He never stops moving and he's there every morning between 7:15 and 7:30. His path is almost the same each time.

I told my neighbor to set up on him and he told me they've been setting up for him for 2 weeks. The mornings they do, they set up at 5 am and the hog doesn't show. The mornings they do not, the hog shows.

They've tried going out after him on a 4 wheeler but they said he runs even faster when he hears it.

We both think this hog is over 300 pounds.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get close enough for a rifle shot? When I'm off this week, I think I'll sit by my barn and see if he shows.

Put a 30 round clip in your AR and get after him.

What kind of distance from your house to the trail he uses? How far is the shooter setting up from his trail?

If he is crossing during daylight, go out at daylight and shoot it. That hog heads in early when he sees a light.

          Barn is a good plan.

What is the shooters effective range?

It amazes me how intelligent these things can be.

I'm good to 130 yards, standing off hand. 150 yards kneeling and 150+ prone with a tripod.
He's within all 3 of my barn. I think those guys are on the wrong side of the wind when the hunt him and they are typical rifle hunters - they don't pay attention to that sort of stuff.

              I have a 30-30 and a 243. I can't put my 30-30 on a tripod but I don't think my 243 is big enough. Or is it???

If you can put one in his ear, or just below, that .243 will do the job!

There are several portable tripods and bipods made for a mobile type of situation.

He'll be running full bore. An ear shot for me will be almost impossible.

Running hog at 100 yards. Place the 243 cross hairs at the tip of his nose. Most of the time that'll be a neck shot, depending on speed. And keep firing until he drops or it is no longer safe to do so.
Good luck and waiting for ldp

.243 is what I shoot hogs with. I killed a 280 pound sow last year with a shot behind the shoulder using 100gr. Softpoints. She ran maybe 50 more yards and piled up. Having said that I've seen a big boar take 6 rounds of .223 and one .308 while on the run and he never slowed up. I'd try for a head shot if you can. If you hit him a little far back it'll hit him in the neck. If not just body shoot him till he goes down. If you put one in the right spot he ain't gonna make it far.

Why not throw out some corn on his trail at the spot you want to shoot him at. Put the corn out several hours before you plan on hunting him though because if he is smart he will probably smell your scent if you put corn out within 4 hours of hunting him and he will probably run even faster once he smells you.

.243 is plenty of gun, if he is going across a pasture you should have enough time for multiple shots if needed.

Aim right behind the ear with that .243. It'll turn his lights out. The largest I've ever killed weighed 385 on scales. 22LR at 40 yards behind the ear. DRT. As far as getting on a specific old boar. Good luck. Those things be be nocturnal as hell and are smarter than any mature buck ever thought about.

If you were confident enough shooting at a running target with the 30-30, at 130 yards, that is more than enough gun to use. But, It pretty much limits you to one shot. I would lead him a few inches in front of his nose and squeeze. He'll go down.
