I feel your pain brother.....
For the past 6 years I have been hunting 80 acres of family property in east tx with hwy to the north and 2 other leases (with trigger happy hunters) on the other 3 sides.
It is tough! The
My neighbors on the south side do the exact same. 400 yards of fence line with stands on each end and a 30 ft wide food plot all the way down. In some spots i have patches of oats 3-4 ft on my side of the fence line.
I have tried the neighborly thing with no luck. Property owner is an A hole and the guys that lease the place stay a season or two and split.
For the first couple years I didn't see but 3 or 4 deer. Seriously! I hunted hard, sun up to sun down, got in the stand an hour before sun up and only drove on the place to fill feeders. Around me, different story, it sounded like a war zone. I was furious and every thought that has been mentioned crossed mine as well but I knew it wouldn't do a **** bit of good.
So I did some research on how to manage for wildlife on small tracts of land. After reading countless articles and forums it clicked...... if i do my best to provide a safe haven for the does (I call it the nursery) I should have an advantage.
So I rented a dozer, cleared a little bit, dug a little pond and left 30 acres in the center of the property as is except for an acre in the center of it. I cleared it for a food plot and put a feeder out as well.
That feeder stays running all year with protein/corn mix and the plot is maintained year round as well. I have a 2 person ladder stand set up overlooking the plot so the wife and I can go sit and watch. We don't hunt this area at all.
This year i have seen more deer than all the others combined. We have a group of 8 does that are regulars and 2 of them had fawns this year.
It's tough brother.... I know! Just do what's right for the deer. Provide for them the best you can with what you have available.
Ohhhh and another thing....
The guys on the surrounding leases don't bowhunt! This guy does ;0)
