My neice didnt start talking at all untill she was almost 4. They did the dr, speech therapy, etc but they all said just give her time. Now she is 14 any perfectly normal. If you are worried about it, go to the dr to ease your mind. Otherwise, at 14 months, i wouldnt worry too much. Chances are in a few months, you'll be begging for silence!!! (Trust me, my son is 3 and talks constantly!!)

I didn't see this before. Everyone was worried about my son because he only said a few words till he was 2 (Turned 2 in August) . My wife wanted to have him checked. She had some people came out to the house and they went through a bunch of stuff with him. They said he was behind on his speaking but not terribly. Then one day the switch flipped and now he won't shut up.It didn't happen gradually. It was like it happened overnight.

Our oldest (now 4) didn't say much until after he turned 2. He said the basics momma, dada around 12-14 months but nothing after that. Pre-school wanted us to seek a speech therapist which we did. Not sure if it worked much, I don't think it did. He talks good now except for "f's" and "s's".
The little one (15 months) has only said momma and I haven't heard him say that in a couple months. As long as their hearing is ok, I wouldn't worry much. There are new protocols for tubes now, I think they have to have up to 6 ear infections before they place tubes. We just had our little guy get tubes a few weeks ago.
I see you pm'd Shiner so I'm sure his daughter has a wealth of information. Also, are you bilingual? This delays speech some.

My oldest is 7 and she could say her ABCs at 18 months.
They all learn at different rates bud. I remember saying that I wanted my daughter to just be able to talk so I could have a conversation with her.
Well... I got it! Lol
She won't ever shut up anymore. Lol
He has started talking a lot! And if he doesn't have the words, he is still very much able to get his point across.
Haven't read many past posts. Just posting to add some support to my 1st post.
Hope everything is going well on your end.Last edited by Mac...; 12-30-2015, 12:36 PM.

My daughter seemed to be real interested in observing what was going on around her and didn't care to speak much. I discussed it with my wife and we chalked it up to her older brother doing all the talking. Right around 2 I think it was the flood gates opened and she was ready to be heard.
She caught right up on all her speech and talks non stop. She is now 3 and talks to her "friends" on the phone (play phone) all the time. Little werido... lol

My Son started slow and it worried us a bit but as many others have said it was like the flood gates opened. He went from not saying much at all to never stopping to take a breath. He's 4 now and I can't tell you the last time he was quiet for more than 20 minutes unless he is totally "by himself" and even then he talks to his toys and hums and sings. Seemed like it happened overnight. We read to him most nights and lots of his "games" were/are centered around speech, reading, simple math, colors... etc.

My daughter (first born) was with my grandparents during the day till she was two. She did everything "early" and was speaking in sentences around 2. My son seemed to start talking later but he was in day care (not the same two on one quality time) and he is very stubborn. As long as there is not a medical reason the doctor is concerned about then I would let it ride for now. My son had tubes at a year old and his hearing was completely recovered after he got them. He won't stop talking now but just took his time getting started. Every kid is different. The more you read and talk to them the more they learn. Some kids soak it all in for a long time before they start spitting it back out!

My twin boys are in the same boat. They are 3.5yo and only say a handful of words that we can understand. They have been in speech development through the school district since Aug. It has helped, but been a slow process. They were in a program from the state before that from the age of 2.5.
They have a older sister who is 5 and LOVES to talk.
The speech therapist that did the evaluation said both boys were advanced in their cognitive learning. For my boys I don't think it is a hearing issue as they respond to anyone when they call their name (even when it is the wrong name...twin thing).
Sorry can't help much.......
