Whenever possible, anything that's going to be mounted, or tanned, needs to be frozen as soon as possible.
PSA ... Alvin, at Longhorn told me that he was slowing down and that I should find someplace else to take my tanning, so I don't know if he's taking anymore work.

When I send mine to NTT, I normally bag them while they are still soft, find the smallest Styrofoam cooler that they will all fit in and then put them in the cooler and freeze them while they are in the cooler with the lid off. That way, I know I can get them all put into it. When I am ready to ship, I fill out all my info and place it into a zip lock bag inside the cooler and put the lid on and tape it up good. Shipping from LaMarque to NTT will get there overnight so there is no worry about the hides thawing out. The hides will stay frozen in a cooler for a couple days taped up real well.

I wrap them up in a ball shape and stick them each in a Walmart bag and they go in the freezer. Then at the end up the year I stick then in a cheap Styrofoam ice chest and pack them with dry ice and just ship then UPS ground and they get there the next day from most places in TX.

I recently had a whitetail hide done at NTT. I was a little disappointed with what I got. It came back with 3 holes and 4-5 bare spots on the hide. I took great care of the hide when skinning that deer and know they weren't on it when I gave it to them. Aside from that, the rest of the hide does look nice.
Maybe that's just what you can expect on hide tanning, I dunno.
