    Hide tanning suggestions?

Got us a couple of axis capes that we want tanned for throws or possibly pillows. No fancy rug or anything. Can anyone recommend a good (economic) tanning place around the Houston/San Antonio area? My buddy told me a lot of taxis use Texas Best Stretch up in Conroe and that if you go directly there you can get a better deal ($75 or so per). Anyone have experience with TBS?

I think it's $45 and 60-90 day turn around. Ship it in dry ice.

That is who I am hopefully sending some hides to next month . I have never shipped green hides before, so a little apprehensive about it.

I've done about 15 axis hides and they have all came out great!

x2 ! Mr. Alvin did a whitetail hide for me last year and it turned out awesome. You can barely tell where the arrow went through after he sewed him up. He also helped me out big time by mailing the hide to me when complete, saving me a drive!

                      OP,

I have heard North Texas Tannery does good but I have never used them. And you are asking about hides, not capes.

Yes they are very soft, they are probably just not laid out smooth in the picture.

Yes I pulled them out of the box, unfolded them and took the pic. Once laid out for a few days they flatten out. Nice soft hide. I also had my black bear cape tanned and it came out great!

Ok. Just wondering. I figured it was something like that. That's how mine always look also when I first take them out of the box.

I have been using North Texas Tannery now for about 3 years. Most of the time the skins are for my daughter so I really do not look at them and just give them to her. This last time I looked and it seems that the return product is not as soft or pliable as other skins and hides that I had done from other places before. NTT has some good prices, but these last skins were stiff.

For the OP, check with UPS on how many days it takes to get were you are shipping to, because frozen skins/hides wrapped well will normally still be frozen 2 days later and that will allow you to ship in a good box or small Styrofoam cooler.
