We are having to put our beagle, Emerson, down this evening. He has been having rapid and shallow respirations all day and the X-ray confirmed a mass and collapsed lungs. Even though he can't breathe well, he's still moving along well. The vet just believes it's a matter of days, no matter what we do.
He was a rescue around 13 years ago. He's never bitten anybody. He was there when we brought all 3 kids home from the hospital. He's never met a stranger, but he's also been protective around the kids.
I wanted what's best for him, and I didn't want him to suffer through any prolonged process. Outside of being gun-shy when I tried him on rabbits, he's been all beagle.
I've never gone through anything like this, and I always knew the day was coming that I'd have to make this choice. All my other dogs have just wandered off and never came back. I never wanted to make this decision.
