My Dad finally got some this year after being nearly deaf for years. He said it took a while to adjust because he's hearing so many things that he's never heard before. He now has them tuned in and wishes he would have done it sooner.

I need them bad, but my pride along with the cost keep me from doing it. I'm scared that i will be able to hear everything the wife and kids say about me behind my back since they're so accustomed to me not hearing them.

I recently got hearing aids as well. I'm a teacher and a coach so I have to pass the DOT hearing test every year as part of my physical to renew my CDL. The last time I went in I barely passed the hearing test given by the audiologist and she asked if I thought about getting hearing aids. I jokingly told her I could not afford them and she said that she had someone that could help. She gave me a card to the Texas Department of Rehabilitation Services here in College Station. I called the lady and set up an interview and after the application process, she indicated that I qualified for services (basically I needed them for work) and we began the process in July. The whole time I thought that this was a joke and that they were going to say I still owned several thousand dollars for "my share." I went in for my final consultation somewhere during the middle of August and when she handed me my paperwork to order my hearing aids I noticed that my portion was ZERO. I received my hearing aids the second week of September. They paid for 100% or the doctors visits, initial fitting, and subsequent follow up appointments. I received a pair of Phonax Audeo V with bluetooth capability, the bluetooth adapter for my phone, and a humidifier to store them in for free. What started out as a joke turned into about 4K worth of services. I'd check with your local office and see if they can help you out.

My father was beyond the point of needing a hearing aid. He refused to pay the $$ due to his sisters experience and I was extremely frustrated because he could not hear me. Appearantly my voice was at a level that was harder for him to hear. I remembered reading about Game Ear abut 10 or so years ago. Found them on Amazon and ordered a set of the digital ones. It has made a night and day difference for him. He does not mind wearing them, actually he choses to wear them now and he can hear me fine now.Might be worth a shot...whole lot cheaper than real ones. I believe it was this model we ordered, I know it was the digital. http://www.amazon.com/Walkers-Game-E...lker+game+ears

Iceman, I am in the same career as you and went through the same service as you did. I am on my second pair. The Department of Rehabilitation Services is great, they will help you out if you require them in order to successfully do your job. Mine cost me nothing other than the time to get the examination and the fitting of the hearing aids.
To anyone reading this post you should seriously consider going this route if it means you may not be able to do your job.

Well I declare. I would not believe the state of Louisiana has any money left over for anything after all the free cell phones, free housing, free injection needles, free electric, free health care, etc. etc.. Somehow I am not eligible for anything except to pay taxes. It seems to have something to do with me having a full time job or something.... Oh well. I am happy you guys got yours.
