I think there is more to it than on the surface and your daughter was caught up in the crossfire, more or less a scapegoat that made the delivery. She had nothing to do with the contents but has been blamed for the entire deal. Someone(a crafty student) thought this plan out very of what was to be in the basket and then didn't show up to make the delivery, thus distancing themselves from the heat.

My wife is a HS choir director, and past HS & College drum major, she's been around these "welcome or hospitality" gifts a long time. 95% of the time they are all readily edible treats that get devoured in the stands immediately. This was not the case as nothing in there was meant to be consumed without some work.

I'd bet a dime to a dollar that the "cute, pickle sized watermelon" was slipped in there after approval or was covered up altogether. I know I might get flamed but come on, it was a real bad idea to present a little tiny watermelon to a predominately black school. Yes, one can say "white cheddar popcorn and crackers is racist too" but in reality, the kids ate it so fast it didn't sink in. They had to ponder that watermelon a while.

This same thing happened in one of the last two years when a predominately black school was presented with ethnic hair care products and another offensive item, it might have been several packages of watermelon candies. It didn't go over well.

As far as the comments made about your daughter being a disgrace, that ain't gonna fly, be a thorn in their side for as long as it takes. Fight the good fight for your child.

WOW again... They drop the punishment because they just know really investigated and found your daughter had nothing to do and want her to write an apology letter?? ***?? They should be apologizing to you folks. What idiots! I think That if you need to be bailed out for stomping their arse I will donate some cash!! Prayers up for your family and our country!!

Oh, I'd have her write the letter, only the school probably wouldn't like it much. My letter would go something like this:

I'm sorry the fruit basket that was given to you caused negative nationwide attention on both our schools.

I'm sorry the adult faculty member who inspected the gift prior to it being given to you didn't realize it could be considered inappropriate.

I'm sorry the school district tried to shift blame from the above mentioned faculty member onto the students.

As a person of mixed-race myself, I'm sorry if this fruit basket offended you. Bless your heart. My parents raised me right. My parent taught me respect. Respect for myself. Respect for others. I realize if the worst thing someone does to me in this life is to give me a watermelon fruit basket, I've done exceptionally well. You see, I don't live in a glass house. My parents have taught me life is hard and the value of hard work. You see, I know life isn't fair. Reality isn't pretty. There are people in the world who will think less of me, just because the color of my skin and the blood that runs through my veins. I am better than them. I will not lose one second of sleep over them. I will not justify them nor their stereotypes. I will succeed. My successes will be my own, earned through my own hard work and not handed to me on a plater because of some politically correct class system.

I'm sorry if my apology doesn't seem sincere, because it isn't. I'm sorry I'm being forced to write this letter as a condition of not being suspended.
