So basically none of the kids giving out the gift baskets were white? And they were still suspended? Whoever suspended your daughter is on drugs or something. That's idiotic.....the whole black people eat watermelon thing is stupid anyway. I dated a black girl for quite some time and never once saw her eat watermelon. That doesn't even make sense. Black people don't eat watermelon.....everybody does.
Yea, I never got the whole fried chicken and watermelon thing as being racist . I personally love both and so does EVERYONE I know. Dosnt matter what your skin color is.
ALOT of my family is in education and some really high up. My advise. Don't let this go by the wayside. Attorney up and take care of business. This is BS!!

Wow this thread blew up. Obviously it's a indication of a issue that is simmering and bothers a lot of other people.
Few things.
For those that missed it, my daughter is mixed. Half black half Hispanic. She was not offended by the contents. She also has told me she knew of no racial motivation.
My daughter had nothing to do with putting this basket together and was chosen a few minutes before to help present it, yet she is getting in trouble like she hand picked the contents.
My daughter has NEVER got in any trouble since she was in kindergarten. I mean not even a talking to!
The band director looked at the basket before it was presented and had no issues.
The watermelon thing was not lost on me, however no race "owns" a fruit. Screw anyone that thinks I can't like watermelon because I happen to be of a lighter skin tone. I did however question her since I felt that watermelon was a strange gift also. Well the watermelon was homegrown and included because it was "cute" was what I was told. It was the size of a pickle. It makes sense to me since the watermelons my father used to try to grow in Oregon were pint sized and I thought they were funny also. I have never heard any racial indications about coconuts or pineapple.
The person that complained was actually the student president from what I gather. I asked my daughter that had no knowledge of the persons name that responded on that news article what their name is and it's the same name of the person that responded. I bet she's smiling and laughing she was able to manipulate adults so easily.
These two schools have a rivalry. Personally I'm wondering if the motivation is due to this fact and that AHS has beat the pants off them in almost all sports. To bad the school administrators by playing into this may make this rivalry more serious.
Today I went to get my daughter early since a assistant principal was telling students my daughter was a disgrace to band and her school. My daughter has been extremely proud (to the point of really making me mad) of her school and brims with school pride. She's loved band and school. She has stayed after school to help with band almost everyday since she has been a freshman. This has ticked me off because I knew this school cares nothing about my child, or yours for that matter. The school system at this point is nothing but a corporation in my opinion. They churn kids out like a machine. Heck call the school and you get a answering system with cute little numbers to press just like a major corporation. Good luck talking to anyone. Trying to talk with a teacher or principal in person is like trying to contact the president of the United States of America.
I'm beyond mad at this point. I will go to whatever extreme they force me to until this is not held against my daughter because she is innocent no matter how you look at it.

Great post and you are 100% right about the school system these days. Give 'em hell.
