    Have a question.

I am going tomorrow to buy a deep freezer. This freezer will only be used to store deer meat and I want to make sure I don't get one too small. I have been looking at the 7 cf units. Question is, is that big enough to store 3 average size deer or a couple deer and a pig with out being too cramped. I am used to a stand up freeze and I had plenty of room but I don't remember what size it was. Any. advice would be appreciated.

We have a small deep freezer that's about 7 cu ft and it will hold 3 deer if the meat is boneless and wrapped.

It prolly will hold all that, but it's likely to be cramped.

I'm thinking the same as the OP.
If 7cf is too small which size would you all recommend?

For the most part my deer are processed into the two back legs into round stakes. Back straps into butterfly stakes and the rest into hb meat. Don't know if that helps.

I'd rewire the garage outlet for it so it's not GFCI to avoid the compressor motor tripping the safety breaker in the GFCI. I did it for my son's freezer, easy if you know how to. If you don't know how, get an electrician. Hunt hard- fill the freezer!

That's for sure! Buy the biggest one you can afford, and that can fit in the space available for it.

7 would be over packed I don't think it would hold 3 deer and a pig.

Went with a 10.2 cf. I think it will work out just fine. Thanks for the advice.

It will hold that just fine. We have this one and had plenty of room for 3 deer and 3 pigs last year.

Only thing is you will have to dig to find what you want sometimes.

Get as big as you can afford and have room for, just like a safe. You may end up on an elk hunt and someone gives you a side of beef

Not much help but found this funny. I use a stand up and like it much better over a chest freezer. Much easier to find and sort your game. Click image for larger version

Yes, definitely go upright! The only thing chest freezers are good for is stockpiling bags of ice at the lease so you don't have to run into town immediately after killing a deer. One guy did gut a deer and remove the legs at the knees then put her in our lease freezer (chest) whole because he was planning to hunt for a few more days, but I don't think that's actually legal. Something about a cold storage facility log book comes to mind....But i digress.

Chest freezers end up with meat at the bottom that you forget about, and it gets freezer burned. Stuff gets buried in there. The stand up, I can sort everything out and really see everything in there....Plus short folks don't have to crawl inside to find what they're looking for.
