Feeding out pig for slaughter.

Me and a buddy bought a Yorkshire pig from a kid that let his grades start slipping so he can't show. He has agreed to board it for the next 2 weeks until we have time to slaughter it. Obviously it needs to be fed and we're covering those costs. I'd like to feed it good these last two weeks and maybe get bigger. Do you guys have any suggestion of how or what to feed it. Thanks

Corn will put the fat on him. Depending on what feed he had him on will depend on how long you need to feed him out. A lot of the show feeds are medicated and withdrawal times for slaughter of 28 or so days.

I'm glad you mentioned that My Buddy said about a week and all those chemicals will be out of them. I figured it would take a little bit longer than that.

I would try and feed it out as long as possible. We butchered a show pig a few years ago, without feeding out, and the meat wasn't too good. We figured it was from the show feed.

We also soak regular corn in water a day or two so it's easier for them to digest.

Friend of mine swears the best way to feed out pigs is they absolutely have to e on concrete for 30 days, feed is a matter of choice, he uses horse and mule, corn, or even hen scratch. I don't know, but I do let him feed out pigs for me and have never been disappointed.

It has been several years now since I fed one out but I had excellent results with Purina Pork Producer. They out gained corn fed, shorts and slop fed hogs. Corn fed is hard to beat for flavor.

Did it to one of my FFA hogs many years ago. Let her sit for a month or so more on just regular pig feed. Stopped all the enhancers and exercise. Lots of junk food from home too.

Not to hijack a thread, but I heard to feed out a feral you feed them charcoal to worm them. Anybody else heard/tried that?

I don't think charcoal will get rid of worms, it's not a toxin, but charcoal is supposed to bind with toxins and other impurities that will transport them through the animals system and helps to prevent them from being absorbed. Supposedly charcoal does improve weight gain and growth in animals.

I just fed cracked corn for thirty days. Turned out great.

I feed 2 show pigs out every year and this is what I do. Don't feed them too much or they will pack fat on and your bacon will be 90% fat. I fed too much corn this year and will post pictures of my bacon tomorrow. It has way too much fat.

I recommend feeding 6-8 cups of cracked corn twice a day. I was probably feeding 10-12 cups twice a day this year and they went from 230 to 318 in 45 days.
