    Handling hogs in the field

So I have seen a lot of people doing different things, to stay tick, mite and bug free:
    - Just letting them rot.
    - Everyone wears gloves.
    - putting dish washer soap on them.
    - Pepper on them to keep the flies away.

We are going hunting this weekend and my plan is just to take back-straps and the hams and leave them in the field.

Back in Colorado for deer and elk we skin'em, quarter them, bag them and pack them out. We really dont worry too much about such things.

What are gloves? Who's doing dishes? Pepper is better on cooked pigs. Shoot em. Cut em up. Cook em. Eat em.

I just wear gloves while I clean them back at the shop.

From the field, I just use my bare hands to drag them out.

I wear rubber gloves when field dressing and butchering feral hogs. Brucellosis is nothing to play with.

I'll sometimes wear gloves cleaning deer or pigs, but its just to make cleanup easier. A little blood, guts, and bugs on your hands ain't gonna hurt you.

Yeah, I read a story about a guy that got this

Never again do I clean barehanded.

Still can't get my brother to put gloves on.

When I get serious about pig killin I load a garden sprayer with white vinegar and start spraying them as I walk up to them and soak em good...kills the fleas dead...otherwise all the pig fleas jump on to you.

Don't gut them and your good to go. Most of the hogs I shoot I just take the front and back legs and the straps. The ribs don't have enough meat to bother with and the inner tenderloins are so small it's not worth going after.

We cut out back strap... that's it... last thing I do before we walk away is split the belly so the buzzards can get in there. They are typically 90% gone in a week

You ain't joking...had a buddy who was in the hospital for months & can't pay him to clean one any longer. Same with a another who caught vibrio & won't get in the bay & gave up salt flat fishing.

Can't say I blame them, but guess you would have to walk in their shoes to give it up completely.

                            That's what I do.

I've never had a problem cleaning hogs and I've cleaned many hundreds of hogs, maybe thousands in my lifetime. I know they carry diseases and most of the time now I use latex gloves, but more for easier clean up than anything. Never hunted hogs in West Texas or elsewhere, but most East Texas hogs don't have fleas... that's what wallows are for... keeps them tick/flea free for the most part. I've never gotten a flea or tick from hogs. The hog lice will not get on humans... they're unique to hogs, just like duck/goose lice or other similar parasites... The past several years, we have had access to a good skinning rack with running water so we generally hang them up and rinse them down, more to get the dirt/mud off as best we can, then cut the hide into strips and just peel 'em like a banana... sure is a lot easier than trying to skin 'em like a deer, plus it saves most of the pork fat on the meat instead of the hide...
