Well they got me. I got a call from my banks fraud department last Thursday. They told me there had been like 5 transactions at gas stations around the hobby area that day and was it me. I said no I was at work in Humble and the transactions all were pending showing a $1.00. So the bank declined them all and canceled my card. Well all the transactions cleared today and they are all $100 a piece. I am so mad right now. I know I will get my money back but the bank said it can take 10 days before I get it back. I didn't really have an extra $500 to loan out for 10 days lol with opening weekend this weekend. I wish I could get my hands on these people that do this. Rant over and everyone have a great day.

Sorry to hear that. Not a whole lot of ways to prevent fraud but I'll say use your debit card as "credit" (aka, enter in a zip not your pin at the pump) and run it as credit anywhere else so that pin can't get hijacked. Doesn't change how the money comes out of your account, just protects your pin a little better.
Also, using a credit card will keep you away from the "your money is gone" situation. Good news is banks are getting smarter and can react faster.
I hate it for you, it's a pain in the ***!

I had the same thing happen years back. I was on a flight over the Atlantic and when I got to the states my card wouldn't work. While on the flight between Europe and the US i had $3800 spent from my account. Someone in California ordered a bunch of electronics online, but the bank caught it since I do notify them when I deploy. They said it would take "up to" 10 days to return the money to my account. It was back in less than 4 days. Yeah, it sucks, and the bank told me they will no give me any information on the person(s) suspected.

I travel for business globally and had my card snagged at the check-in desk of the Sheraton Hotel in Mexico City. It was the only time it came out of my pocket while I was there, I know it was someone behind the front desk.
I got the money back from my bank ($3200), but Sheraton refused to pursue any action or even look into it from their side.

The multiple $1.00 transactions were to see if the card would work through my guess would be donation sites. Once the thief sees that the card will go through they go on a spending spree until the card is shut off. My guess would be that they used a program similar to a credit card generator. The thieve will run it against certain donation sites until they get a hit, once it works then let the spending begin. Just my $.02
