    .270 for elk?

I have a 7mm but I'd have to re-sight it with elk ammo

I have a .270 and a few boxes of 140 grain fail safe ammo, which is very similar to a partition

would you carry a .270 for elk?

I wouldn't mind taking one. Have taken the 270 short mag on combo deer/elk hunt and shot both.

If a 60# bow with a sharp stick can kill it, I'd say you're safe with a .270

i think the most popular cartridge for moose hunting in europe is the 6.5 swede. your .270 is just fine.

as an aside, you always hear stories about the guy that had to shoot x deer or elk 5 times and all the shots were in the heart and lungs before it would go down and that's why you need a minimum .338 Lapua to hunt cottontails. funny that you never see the pics of these super deer.

The rancher who owns the place we hunt in Colorado only used a 270. Prior to that 30-30. Pop killed his cow last year with a 7x57 topped with a 1.5x7x40mm scope.

Jack O'Connor took plenty of elk, moose, and sheep with a .270.

Having said that, I would re-sight the 7mm and use that with the .270 as a back up in case you bumped the scope while hunting.

Read a little Jack O Conner, you'll be a believer.

space limitations means only being able to bring one rifle

this gun has been with me for almost 20 years its never let me down

ruger MKII with a 3x9 redfield tracker...I've killed probably 50-60 deer with it along with a few hogs, coyotes, and one mouflon sheep

Two years ago my dad and I went on a cow elk hunt. He brought his 270. I brought my 300 ultra mag. We both took good broadside shots. His fell in it's tracks. Mine ran about 30 yards and fell over.

I'd check out the ballistics against your expected yardage for the shot. However, I think you'll be okay with a 270. I shot a huge bull awhile back with a 270 mag and worked out well.

                          Remember, a .270 is only .007" smaller than a 7mm.

Shot placement as always, yardage limitations of the chosen round and it will do the job just fine

Good luck on your hunt and safe travels. Lots of LDPS please

Since you already own the 7 mag, use it!

Why lower your odds/options with a 270 when you have the 7mm at your disposal?
