i had one before we moved to Colorado. it started out as a grass pile/ veg clippings on the side of my house. it was just a pile that I would throw some water and triple 13 on every now and then. would also get really good grubs for fishing out of it.
There really isn't much to composting. keep it moist (not soaking wet) and throw some nitrogen on it. I would suggest throwing some woody veg in there with it too and rotate it twice a year. it'll take several months before you get something useful. I'd shy away from putting meats and dog poo in it. but that's just me.

I have a 50-gal plastic barrel drilled with 1/2" holes -- maybe 50 of them. It lays on its side with a hinged door about 12x12 on the top. Started with spring grass clippings and mulched leaves, and all our non-animal scraps go into a plastic coffee can in the 'fridge, then out to the barrel when full. I also put egg shells in as well. Be sure to put your coffee grounds in it too. Keep it damp, but not soaked, and turn it over with a shovel/fork about once a month.
