    Composting???

Anybody composting???? Looking at starting a compost bin to use in my flower beds and garden. Looking for some tips.

We just toss anything organic on a pile made with pallets wired together to make a breathable 4-sided container. I sometimes add a cup or two of sugar to help get the wee beasties fired up if I add a lot at once. It helps to stir things up a couple of times per year.

I have been given an 80-year-old compost pile. It'll probably fill the bed of a truck. If anybody wants it PM me.

i had one before we moved to Colorado. it started out as a grass pile/ veg clippings on the side of my house. it was just a pile that I would throw some water and triple 13 on every now and then. would also get really good grubs for fishing out of it.
There really isn't much to composting. keep it moist (not soaking wet) and throw some nitrogen on it. I would suggest throwing some woody veg in there with it too and rotate it twice a year. it'll take several months before you get something useful. I'd shy away from putting meats and dog poo in it. but that's just me.

No meat bone or dog poop but egg shells are ok. Otherwise fruit and veggie snacks and yard waste

Turn them every once in awhile....
And don't forget......They produce a lot of heat,so be mindfull of where
                  you place it.

I have a 50-gal plastic barrel drilled with 1/2" holes -- maybe 50 of them. It lays on its side with a hinged door about 12x12 on the top. Started with spring grass clippings and mulched leaves, and all our non-animal scraps go into a plastic coffee can in the 'fridge, then out to the barrel when full. I also put egg shells in as well. Be sure to put your coffee grounds in it too. Keep it damp, but not soaked, and turn it over with a shovel/fork about once a month.

I always mix a little dirt in mine when I start a new compost. Probably not necessary but makes me feel like it is getting organisms in there.

So should I put it where the irrigation system hits it??? Or is that too much water??

IMO that would be too much water--

Just damp...need airflow...turn over periodically. ..no meat or meat byproducts...and I like mine touching the ground but it does seem to work its way back in the earth. I'll have a big pile and not check it for a while then when I do there's nothing there but a gallon worth haha
