      What others have said about metes and bounds.....and actually those are pretty good, I have seen some that refer to a "iron rod in a small pecan tree"......never mind that it was done 50 + years ago and that small pecan tree is now huge, if it's even there anymore. I went thru a class years back and the instructor spoke of one he had seen that instead of a measurement in feet it referred to "half a days ride on a slow walking mule"

            I used to run a GIS facility and we worked with old surveys that was measured in the "number of turns of a wagon wheel" with markers like a bottle with rocks around it.
