We have two Polaris Rangers at the ranch that are used throughout the hunting season.

They are maintained very well, and are driven sensibility.

We have had a host of problems with both of them.

From my experience they should hold up much better than they do for what they cost.

I will say the Polaris had amazing suspension, other than that it was trash.
    Same thing here Shane.

And I agree, the suspension is great, but the machine as a whole, not so much.

The ranch's foreman is a mechanic as well, and he constantly has to tinker with them to keep them on the road.

They required more upkeep than any other piece of machinery on the ranch.

Well I'm a happy Polaris owner and some what brand loyal. 5/800 sportsmans and 8/900 ranger crews. Maintenance is maintenance no matter what you buy its a machine and will break eventually. Fix the weak links and continue on

I have a gator 825I. I have had it for a year and have put 1800 miles on it. Zero problems. Dad and BIL just bought the new Mule. Sweet *** machine. Not a fan of polaris period.

I've heard the new mules are pretty nice. I personally own a Ranger 900xp eps. Like others have said it's all in how you treat the machine. I haven't had any issue's what so ever but it's only 1 year old with about 400 miles. No lift kit or big tire, it's all stock. I use it for what it's intended for, deer lease and tending to cows.

That's the ONLY thing that causes me to hesitate on the Ranger. Well... the 1000cc displacement of the Honda is kinda cool too. I just want to do enough due diligence that I can get a general consensus before I'm locked into a machine for the next 6 years.
A belt linked transmission is what most manufacturers use, there's a reason for that too.

Just be aware that you are going to find this with every major ATV/UTV manufacturer. None of them are easy to deal with.

In our case we paid for the Polaris maintenance package so we can't be accused of not maintaining them properly. We take them in at the mileages we're told to. Anyone who says Polaris are good are either trying to sell you something or haven't owned one long enough (or got lucky and got a good one, if that's possible). We've owned 6

I'd look into the new Honda 1000 that is hitting dealers now.

I own a 2014 gator 850i and would look hard at the Honda if doing it over.

Not a fan of the ranger.

1999 6 wheeler still rocking down to the duck pond. It has been a bad mother scratcher of a machine. It breaks and gets fixed. Same as all of them, if a man got machinery a man got problems.

Didn't you say 4 earlier in the thread?

You do also realize those maintenance plans only cover certain things?

What type of problems were you having?

We owned 6 total. Have 4 now and trying to sell at least 2.

I'm talking about the plan where you pre-pay for oil/fluid changes and scheduled set hour mark tune up etc.

Just making the point that we didn't try to change/fix anything, the Polaris dealer did all work.

Every problem you can think of. Fuel filter problems a lot, transmission, engine blown twice (second dealer admitted fault, and paid for a new one) but it broke down for other reasons 2 weeks after getting it back. I'm in the office so I can't list specifics. But like mentioned they're NOT built for work. Maybe if you baby them they do ok.
